The cartoon effect of the figure art as well as the "legends and lore" tag - are clues that this may be a fantasy version of Vikings. I like the fact that some of the characters are historically based, and that the fictional ones are clearly called out as such. The sidebars provide a truly interesting background for each doll. Because this is a fantasy version, I don't expect the artist to tell me which, if any, of the costumes are based on period sources or historical reconstructions. But... it would be nice to know if any of the costumes had more than "artistic license" going for them. Still, like I said, one shouldn't expect such with that tag line. Everything is big enough to make cutting out fairly easy. The dolls' necks, arms, and legs, however, have a cartoon thinness that means they won't stand up to play. The colors are reminiscent of natural dyes. The art is a pleasant mix of simple and detailed, appropriate to the cartoon style. I'm not a ardent fan of cartoon style, thus I can't claim to love this book, but it does what it set out to do, I think. This is clearly meant for a collector's bookshelf rather than a toy.
The graphics are great and the paper is sturdy. We enjoyed this.
Whimsical dolls with many costumes and accessories bring Viking legends to the child (or collector) on your holiday list. The art is wonderful; poses and expressions, details on the accessories is beautifully done in a style that is delightful. Lives and loves, deeds and destinies are given for each doll. Each doll has multiple accessories for various poses. There is even a Lindwyrm (a kind of Norse dragon), with accessories of its own! The actual book is well made, nice heavy card with a very nice finish on the illustrations. Each accessory has the name of the doll it belongs to printed on one tab. The cost is very low for the quality of the book and illustrations. This book is certain to delight anyone, young or old, who is interested in the Viking sagas and history.
I bought 3. One for my daughter, one for a gift and one for ME! I am a Viking buff and the idea of Viking paperdolls this cute just grabbed my attention. Upon receiving, I loved it even more. The outfits are not period ( that was the only disappointing part) but they were whimsical and cute, and they had elements of period-ness to them. I loved that the dolls where the 'first' historical Viking Kings and Queens of Denmark, where my family lives!

This was a birthday gift for my older sister. She opened it while I listened over the phone and she let out a cute yell. She is 69. We were taught by our mother to be very proud of our Norwegian heritage and want to think of Vikings as nice folk. These certainly appear to be. She can't wait to play with these with her 4 grandchildren, especially the eleven year old boy who was "kidnapped" last year by a Viking at a Celtic festival they attended. The Viking was dressed much like the paper dolls. I can't wait to hear what her grandchildren think of them. I loved them and it took much effort to mail them on to my sister.
